Me: Hi, Early Bird.
Early Bird: Hi, Mom.
Me: Tell me a bit about yourself.
EB: I thought you’d never ask! I am very sensitive to things that other people might not be sensitive to.
Me: Can you give me an example?
EB: Here is an example: sometimes I smell dinner cooking when I’m upstairs and my brother doesn’t!
Me: Do you like being able to smell that well?
EB: Yes! I have other very good senses, too.
Me: Tell me about them.
EB: My sight is very good; I can see a very long way. My hearing is also very good, and that helps me a lot when I’m far away.
Me: If your hearing is so good, how come there are times when I’m talking to you and you don’t seem to hear me?
EB: That’s because sometimes when I’m close to something, my ears don’t process because they’re used to hearing from far away. You know those times when I turn around when you’re talking to me> It’s because my ears point away so it seems quieter and less obnoxious.
Me: Okay, I did not know that and I am really glad I just asked you that. What are some of your favorite things?
EB: Favorite things? I have a LOT of favorite things. You are going to have to be more specific.
Me: Okay, what is your favorite color?
EB: I have so many favorite colors, I can’t even decide.
Me: Can you narrow it down to three colors?
EB: Three of my favorite colors? That’s more easy. One of my favorites is brown. Red also reminds me of strawberries, which makes me happy. And one of my last favorite colors is green. I really like green.
Me: I probably should have started with this question: how old are you?
EB: 8 years old.
Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?
EB: I think I want to be a chef. My senses would come in handy.
Me: What do you wish people knew about what it is like to be autistic?
EB: I wish people knew that it’s not very fair to think that someone who is different from you is different in a bad way.
Me: Is there anything else you would like to tell my readers?
EB: Yes! There still are some favorite things that I have. Especially food. My best favorite food is noodles with Alfredo sauce. I also like a lot of other foods like rice, steak, and many more foods.
Me: What’s your favorite vegetable?
Me: Is that because you grew some in our garden, or because of how they taste?
EB: Actually, it’s both! I really like how it’s so crunchy, and I grow really good carrots.
Me: Okay, thank you for letting me interview you!
EB: You’re welcome.
