Today Early Bird asked me what it means when dogs yawn. I was surprised because I thought the answer was obvious. So I asked him what it means when he yawns to nudge him into the answer I thought was correct. Early Bird replied that it doesn’t matter what it means when humans do it, because dogs are not human. He then shared that when Tasmanian Devils yawn it’s to scare away other creatures. (Thank you, Kratt brothers.)

That was a really great reminder that we shouldn’t judge others based on ourselves. Autistic body language can be very different from neurotypical (NT) body language, and because NTs base their interpretation on NT norms, they misread autistics frequently. I shared that with Early Bird and thanked him for that reminder. So now I’m not 100% sure why dogs yawn. Probably still tired or low oxygen though. 🙂
